The country is divided into 16 wine regions with the most famous being Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal. The climate is generally continental with many varied microclimates and soil types. Rivers dominate the landscape with the Danube and it’s associated tributaries being the most famous. The summers are warm and the winter cold and the grape varieties planted reflect this. Many of the grape varieties are unique to Austria and that is what makes the wines interesting and characterful. Within the regions many vineyards have been identified as having a particular character due to their unique site and location and are regarded as offering greater character and quality.
