Companhia das Lezirias
Companhia das Lezirias have been producing wine since 1881 and currently cultivate about 130 hectares. They are at the forefront of sustainability with the Tyto Alba range of wines, inspired by the Barn Owl or Tyto.
The winery operates in one of the most important reserves in Portugal - the Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve and the Natura 2000 Special Protection Zone. Companhia das Lezírias won the 2014 edition of the Green Project Awards in the category of "Agriculture, Sea and Tourism" with the project, "Companhia das Lezírias: forest management for biodiversity" which summarises a number of working guidelines, whose main objective is to ensure the sustainability of forest management in the heathland, with particular focus on conservation and promotion of biodiversity.
Portugal has a myriad of wines regions many of which have only recently been recognised by the wine authorities. The Tejo Region, where our winery is based, has gone a through huge transformation in recent years. The shift has been towards quality, total production has shrunk and the focus of production has moved away from the riverbank of the Tagus River towards the clays of the north and the sandier scrub in the south. There has also been a move towards noble indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet for the reds and Fernao Pires for the whites. The wines from Tejo are unique and full of character, enjoy!
