Bring the flavours of Portugal into your home on Friday the 4th of June!
Join Andrea our Master of Wine at 8pm, via Zoom, to taste three, intriguing Portuguese wines, one white and two reds. The wines all come from the excellent winery Companhia das Lezirias based in the Tejo wine region, located near Lisbon. The winery operates in a region famed for its nature reserves and it has won awards for its sustainable practices and biodiversity, a wonderful achievement! The wines are also all suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians!
Portugal is famous for its Pastel de Nata, an iconic Portuguese Dessert but pastry dishes both sweet and savoury abound. On the evening of the tasting we recommend that you whip up a Folhados de Vegetais (a savoury vegetable puff) recommended by ‘Food From Portugal’ whose purpose is to divulge Portuguese food to all corners of the world. (On a personal note we have cooked the puffs at home and they are yummy)!
The wines to be tasted are: -
Tyto Alba Branco
Grown in the middle of a forest, on sandy soil, this wine is a careful blend of 90% Fernao Pires and 10% Verdleho grapes. The wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels for about 2 months. The resulting wine is fresh and crisp with a delightful aroma of tangerines, pineapple, peach and a hint of vanilla from the oak.
Tyto Alba Castelao
Made 100% from the Castelao grape and produced in small numbers, this wine is pretty unique. The wine has an elegant and gentle aroma, revealing red fruits, liquorice notes and a touch of earthiness reminiscent of clay. It is very elegant in the mouth with smooth tannins, and a surprising persistence. This wine is aged in small clay amphorae for 12 months, harking back to century old traditions.
The bottle is presented in an attractive wooden nesting box…..wonderful as a gift!
Tyto Alba Merlot
Unusually for Portugal this wine is made 100% from a classic grape variety Merlot. The wine is produced in small lagars and is aged for over 12 months in a combination of French and American oak. The wine is deep garnet in colour with an aromatic combination of paper, tobacco, plums and a hint of toast. The palate is intense and richly flavoured with a long slightly spicy finish.
